An Edinburgh grassroots group which is campaigning to raise awareness of the continuing prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide and for better medicines to deal with new drug resistant strains has been commended in a Parliamentary motion by Lothian Tory MSP Miles Briggs.

The Edinburgh Results Group will mark World TB Day next Friday, 24th March, with a meeting at the city’s Quaker Meeting House at 6.15pm.

Speaking today Miles said:

“ I commend constituents in the Edinburgh Results Group for the work they are doing to raise awareness of the devastating impact TB still has in many developing countries and the 1.5 million people worldwide who die from it each year.

“I wish the group well as they campaign to ensure that the Sustainable Development Goal of ending TB by 2030 is met.”

Title: Edinburgh Results Group to Mark World TB Day

Motion Text:

That the Parliament is aware that World TB Day will be held on 24 March 2017; notes that the day aims to build public awareness that tuberculosis remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of around 1.5 million people each year, mostly in developing countries; is aware that the Edinburgh Results Group will mark World TB Day by hosting a meeting at 6.15pm on that day at the Quaker Meeting House, Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh, which will focus on the development of new drugs to deal with resistant strains of TB and calling for more research to go into both developing more effective drugs as well as a vaccine that will properly protect people from the risk of contracting TB, and using the slogan, The Drugs Don't Work; commends the Edinburgh Results Group for marking World TB Day in this way and for its campaigning efforts on this important issue, and supports the calls from the group and others for governments, agencies, communities, civil society and drugs companies across the globe to redouble their efforts to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of ending TB by 2030.
