Conservatives oppose blanket 20mph roll-out

Councillor Nick Cook

Conservatives today launched a last-ditch bid to halt Edinburgh Council's misguided implementation of a blanket 20mph speed limit across Edinburgh.

Regrettably, Labour and the SNP refused to see sense and the Conservative formal amendment to the Transport and Environment Committee was voted down.

Conservative Councillors pointed out that these proposals will increase both congestion and pollution.

Commenting, Conservative Transport Spokesman Councillor Nick Cook said: “As a capital city and a key engine of growth in Scotland’s economy, Edinburgh Council has a duty to keep the city moving – its people and its businesses. The proposals jeopardise this.

“The 'blanket’ approach proposed-covering some 80% of city streets-will dilute effectiveness of targeted areas which genuinely need and benefit from 20mph zones, such as outside schools.

“We are concerned, too by the cost of this project – almost £2.5m at a time of significant financial challenge for the Council.

“Taxi drivers and key business groups, such as the Federation of Small Businesses, have also voiced concerns, for example over the likely increase in journey times.

“Recent polling conducted by the Edinburgh Evening News also demonstrates that 64% of respondents oppose the plans as presented.

“Despite being outvoted by the left-wing consensus, which for too long has dominated Edinburgh Council, Conservatives were pleased to make the case on behalf of ordinal residents and local businesses concerned by the impact of this flawed policy.

“Please be assured that your Conservative Councillors will continue to fight for common sense, value for money decision making for Edinburgh."
