Miles Briggs, Lothian Tory MSP, is challenging Edinburgh’s Green Party Council candidates to set out their position on a second independence referendum ahead of May’s Council elections.

Speaking today Miles said:

“Ahead of the local elections I have been joining our council candidates in knocking on the doors of voters in communities across Edinburgh and many previous Green voters are deeply concerned that the Greens are planning to give their wholehearted support to the SNP’s plan to hold another divisive second independence referendum. They rightly fear that support for the Greens in the council elections will be seized on by the SNP as backing for a second independence referendum and separation."

“Local voters deserve to know the position of their Green candidates on a second referendum and I am challenging each of them to be upfront and frank over whether they back a second vote or not. This will be a key factor in determining how many Edinburgh residents cast their vote in May."

“When Nicola Sturgeon brings her request for a Section 30 order to Holyrood in the coming days, Edinburgh residents can be assured that the Scottish Conservatives will unanimously vote against it. We were elected on a manifesto to stand against another unwanted and divisive referendum, and we will do everything we can to stop one going ahead. Polls have shown time and again that there is no demand in Scotland for another divisive vote on independence – what Scots want is for the SNP to get on with the day job.”
