Local members of the Edinburgh Conservative and Unionist Association have selected James McMordie as their candidate for the Edinburgh East constituency at the 2015 General Election. The constituency includes Craigmillar, Craigentinny, Newcraighall, Prestonfield and Holyrood.

James is originally from Saintfield, Northern Ireland and moved to Scotland in 2005 to study politics at the University of Glasgow. After finishing his degree, James moved to the Czech Republic, where he taught English and worked as a tour guide, and Armenia, where he completed an internship with the OSCE. In 2011 James returned to study at the University of St Andrews. Upon completing his Masters, James interned for the International Office of the Conservative Party in London for four months.

James then took up the role of Organising Secretary for Edinburgh South West Conservatives in January 2013. In June of that year, James was hired by the Better Together campaign and took a leading role in securing a No vote through his position as Senior Administrator and Fundraising Coordinator for the campaign. Since October 2014, James has been employed at Scottish Conservative Central Office in Edinburgh as Office Administrator.

James said “As a Better Together staffer I promised faster, better, safer change within the UK: I’m going to help deliver that change. But the devolution of power can’t stop there. When I staffed Jim Murphy on his tour around Scotland, it was clear that Holyrood can be just as distant as Westminster. I will deliver more powers for our local councils, helping them to make decisions based on local priorities.”
