Miles Briggs, Scottish Conservative & Unionist MSP for Lothian, is welcoming the news that the co-founder of the Maggie’s Centres, the late Maggie Keswick Jencks, has been announced as one of the two first ever women to enter Scotland’s Hall of Heroes at the Wallace Monument in Stirling following a public vote. The first Maggie’s Centre was opened in Edinburgh in 1996; there are now 19 across the UK. Miles has tabled a Parliamentary motion on the subject at Holyrood this morning which also suggests that a further welcome tribute to Maggie Keswick Jencks would be the successful completion of the planned extension at Edinburgh’s Maggie’s Centre, with the Build a Brick for Maggie’s Campaign having already raised £1 million for the new development.

Speaking today Miles said:

“I am delighted that Maggie Keswick Jencks is to be honoured in Scotland’s Hall of Heroes. Her commemoration there is entirely justified given her inspirational work in developing the Maggie’s Centre concept while she herself was suffering from cancer. Thanks to her pioneering ideas and plans, thousands of cancer sufferers across Lothian, Scotland and the UK have benefitted from the world-class care and support offered at Maggie’s Centres. The huge public vote for Maggie Keswick Jencks is an indication of just how highly people across the UK value Maggies Centres.

“ I believe that a further fitting and lasting tribute to Maggie Keswick Jencks will be the extension at the Edinburgh Maggie’s Centre. I commend all those constituents across Lothian who have donated to the Buy a Brick for Maggie’s Campaign and would encourage more people to do so so that it can offer care and support to even more Lothian residents affected by cancer in the future.”
