Parliamentary motion congratulates former Scotsman editor Magnus Linklater

Miles Briggs MSP

Miles Briggs, Lothian MSP, is congratulating former Scotsman editor Magnus Linklater who today will receive an Honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh. Miles has tabled a Parliamentary motion welcoming the award which is given in recognition of Magnus Linklater’s contribution to Scottish life.

Speaking today Miles said:

“Magnus Linklater has made a huge contribution to public life in Scotland, both as an eminent and successful journalist, editor and media commentator and a great supporter of Scotland’s arts and culture sector, notably serving for many years as Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council.

“I am delighted that the University of Edinburgh has given him this Honorary degree which is very richly deserved.”

Motion Text:

That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Edinburgh resident and eminent journalist, Magnus Linklater, has received an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh; notes that Mr Linklater has received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa in recognition of his significant contribution to Scottish life; is aware that he is a former editor of The Scotsman and The Times, has worked on other newspapers, including the Daily Express, The Observer and The Sunday Times, and has written a number of books on history, culture and politics, and is a former chairman of the Scottish Arts Council; considers that he is a worthy recipient of this honorary degree given the important role that he has played in the media and public life over many years, and wishes him continued success in the future
